Test how a disputed Word file was assembled, whether its date story fits independent records, and whether an apparent original is actually a recent reconstruction.
Home › Digital Evidence Authentication › Word Document Authentication › DOCX Forgery and AI Fabrication Detection
Quick Answer. Word forgery detection compares the claimed history with document structures, source records, and controlled comparison files. Backdated clocks, retyped letters, PDF conversions, cloned letterheads, and automated generation leave different patterns. Examiners test those patterns against legitimate alternatives. Default library metadata can identify a generation workflow, but it cannot establish AI authorship, fraudulent intent, or the truth of the text.
This guide addresses fabrication hypotheses within Word Document Authentication. Use the Word authenticity checklist to frame the claim, then consult RSID editing analysis for session patterns. Here the focus is whether the supplied file was backdated, rebuilt, converted, or assembled to imitate an earlier original.
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Can a Word document be backdated by changing the system clock? | Yes. A writer relying on the local clock can save misleading dates. Compare the file with independently dated email, cloud, backup, and device evidence. |
| How is a retyped Word letter different from its original? | The wording and appearance may match while the package has fresh styles, revision identifiers, relationships, and properties. Compare native versions and verified source records. |
| What can expose a PDF converted into a forged Word original? | Text boxes, fragmented runs, positioned images, artificial line breaks, and reconstructed tables can indicate conversion. Test against the source PDF and converter behavior. |
| Does default metadata prove a Word document was AI generated? | No. Default creator strings, dates, and template structures can identify library based production. Human scripts, business automation, and AI assisted services can all use the same libraries. |
| Can a cloned Word letterhead authenticate an organization? | No. Logos, headers, and signature images can be copied from genuine files. Authorization requires evidence beyond visual and asset similarity. |
| What does NIST synthetic content guidance add to DOCX analysis? | It supports considering provenance, detection, labeling, and their limitations together. It does not provide a universal DOCX test that identifies AI authorship. |
Saving while a device reports an earlier time, potentially affecting application dates and filesystem events that depend on that clock.
A newly assembled document reproducing earlier wording without preserving the earlier file's native editing history.
Runs, frames, or positioned objects created to approximate page layout when converting a rendered source into editable Word content.
Metadata supplied by a programming library or its bundled template when the generating code does not replace those values.
A copied logo, header image, or signature graphic that can link templates without proving authorization of a particular document.
The separate question of whether generated language originated from an AI system, rather than how its DOCX container was produced.
Changing the device clock can influence dates that the application or filesystem obtains from that device. It does not rewrite a separately recorded mail server event or an earlier cloud version. The examination therefore separates locally supplied dates from independent chronology.
A forged date story can also be built by directly editing dcterms:created and dcterms:modified in docProps/core.xml. Neither mechanism requires a visible change to the page. ZIP entry times add context, but they are writer controlled and can use local time conventions with limited precision.
| Suspected method | Detection approach | Alternative to test |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier system clock during saving | Compare internal dates with device events and independent transmission records. | Misconfigured clock, virtual machine, or timezone interpretation. |
| Direct property replacement | Compare core properties with archive records and earlier preserved packages. | Migration software or approved property normalization. |
| Rebuilt historical letter | Compare styles, themes, revision patterns, and content with genuine historical files. | Disclosed reconstruction or accessible replacement copy. |
| PDF converted to Word | Inspect object layout, run fragmentation, and source PDF correspondence. | Routine conversion for editing or production. |
| Library generated narrative | Compare defaults and package structure with controlled library samples. | Authorized automated document assembly. |
| Copied institutional header | Compare image assets and template relationships with genuine exemplars. | Legitimate reuse of an approved organization template. |
A document first observed in a 2025 mailbox does not necessarily originate in 2025. Conversely, a created property reading 2014 does not establish existence in 2014. An earlier independently preserved attachment containing the disputed text is much more informative than an unsupported internal date.
Where device access is authorized, examine relevant system activity and version history. Do not infer a deliberate clock change merely because dates disagree. Test ordinary clock correction, copying, import, and later saving. The conclusion should identify the chronology that fails, not assume the identity or motive of a fabricator.
Preserve the disputed native file, the claimed earlier version, and any source PDF or correspondence. We compare assembly patterns and date evidence before assigning significance to unusual metadata.
Request Confidential Consultation Call (833) 292 3733A reconstructed file can reproduce every visible sentence while losing the original document's internal history. The central question is whether it is being represented as the original electronic document or openly supplied as a reconstruction. Reconstruction itself is not deception.
Review word/document.xml, styles, numbering, headers, and section settings. Retyping can create fresh paragraphs using current defaults. A copied passage can import different style definitions and revision save patterns. Either can explain a clean looking letter whose internals differ sharply from genuine files from the claimed period.
A PDF converter often prioritizes page geometry. It may produce numerous text boxes, explicit positioning, fragmented runs, manual line breaks, and images that substitute for text. Tables can become disconnected objects rather than semantic rows and cells. These patterns identify a possible route from rendered pages to editable content, not a particular fraudulent purpose.
| Word observation | Useful comparison | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Many positioned text objects | Source PDF coordinates and a controlled conversion | Consistency with layout reconstruction. |
| Fresh uniform revision save pattern | Historical native file and genuine recent samples | A different editing pattern, not a creation timestamp. |
| Incorrect symbols or spacing | Rendered source and extracted PDF text | Possible extraction or recognition errors. |
| Image of a signature with matching crop | Verified source graphic or earlier document | Shared graphic source rather than verified signature authorization. |
Compare text at the clause, amount, date, and recipient level. A conversion can introduce innocent transcription errors. A reconstructed paragraph can also carry a material change hidden within otherwise matching wording. Record the exact changed text and its location instead of treating all structural differences as equally significant.
When the source PDF is available, preserve and hash it separately. Render both files in a controlled environment, then compare visual layout and extracted text. A raster image match alone can overlook invisible text layers or altered underlying wording. Link the result to the specific authenticity claim.
A DOCX generator creates a container. A language model produces text. Those are separate processes, and the package usually records more about the former than the latter. A human can feed manually written text into a document library, while AI generated text can be pasted into an otherwise ordinary Word session.
For example, a package produced through python docx can retain creator labels, dates, or styles from a bundled template if the generating program does not replace them. Such defaults are implementation dependent. Compare the actual values and part inventory with a controlled sample from the relevant library version rather than relying on a remembered string.
Uniform styles, sparse revision information, repeated property values, and a familiar package layout may support automated generation. Each also has ordinary explanations. A short letter produced by a business reporting system can be entirely legitimate. A misleading historical letter can be fabricated manually without leaving any library signature.
NIST AI 100 4, Reducing Risks Posed by Synthetic Content, discusses approaches including provenance information, labeling, watermarking, and detection. These methods have different coverage and failure modes. The guidance does not turn an informal writing impression or a generic text detector score into proof that a particular Word file was written by AI.
Assess available source evidence: generation logs, authorized account exports, prompt records, automation scripts, and saved versions. Determine whether each record actually connects to the disputed text. Preserve acquisition context and distinguish a verified record from a supplied screenshot of an alleged conversation.
If a text detector is used as a screening aid, document its version, tested text, output, and validation limits. Do not report a score as the probability that a named person used AI. Missing provenance information also does not establish that the document is human authored or machine generated.
Copied branding can make a newly assembled file look familiar. Compare the underlying assets and template structures, then ask whether independent records connect the communication to the claimed issuer. A logo match identifies shared material, not organizational approval.
Extract relevant images from word/media. Compare exact hashes where possible and inspect dimensions, crop settings, and placement when images have been recompressed. Review header parts, relationship targets, section margins, and template references. A single image can circulate across many genuine and unauthorized documents.
A pasted signature graphic does not demonstrate that a signer approved the wording around it. Likewise, an organization name in custom properties or a template path does not verify access to its systems. Combine the artifact evidence with source correspondence and known genuine examples collected independently.
Create controlled samples using the suspected writer, template, or conversion process where available. Change one relevant condition at a time. Record application versions, settings, and resulting differences. A successful reproduction establishes that a method can produce the observed pattern; it does not establish that the disputed file was produced by that method.
Report the strongest supported conclusion in plain terms. Examples include evidence of later reconstruction, a contradiction in the asserted unchanged history, or consistency with automated assembly. Separate these findings from authorship, intent, and legal fraud. State which additional source records could resolve the remaining questions.
Test each proposed fabrication method against observations that could support it or contradict it, rather than collecting anomalies without a defined question.

No. A current package is not a complete editing archive. Earlier copies may exist in cloud history, backups, source attachments, or device artifacts, subject to availability and authorized collection.
No. It may accurately reproduce an older document. The issue is whether it is disclosed as a reconstruction or misrepresented as an untouched historical original.
Yes. Reusing a template can carry earlier properties and structures into a newer file. Test the text and package history against independent dates rather than trusting inherited values.
That is a legitimate production route. Document the conversion and assess whether the supplied file is being represented accurately. Conversion artifacts alone do not establish deceptive intent.
No. Synthetic content guidance describes approaches and limitations, not a universal certification test for Word prose. Absence of an AI indicator is not proof of human authorship.
Describe preliminary observations as preliminary. A final opinion should address relevant benign alternatives, controlled comparisons, source limitations, and the exact claim that the evidence supports or contradicts.
A strong Word forgery examination explains how the supplied file conflicts with its claimed history, tests realistic alternatives, and states separately what remains unknown about authorship and intent. Our court qualified experts in DOCX forgery detection can present those comparisons clearly to a judge or jury.
