Follow content types and relationships through the DOCX ZIP package to identify the main document, resources, external targets, and structural defects.

Quick Answer. DOCX file structure is an Open Packaging Conventions ZIP package containing XML parts, relationships, properties, and resources. Examiners inspect content types and relationship targets rather than trusting the extension. Package layout can suggest a software workflow, but ZIP dates and part order are not reliable creation dates or unique identifiers of Microsoft Word.
A DOCX package is a directed collection of parts. This chapter of Word Document Authentication explains how those parts connect. Use the XML parts inventory to interpret their contents and file signature analysis to classify the container before extraction.
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Is a DOCX file a ZIP archive? | An ordinary unencrypted DOCX is a ZIP package organized by Open Packaging Conventions. ZIP validity alone is insufficient: the content type declarations and office document relationship must identify a WordprocessingML document. An arbitrary archive renamed .docx does not meet that test. |
| Where does a DOCX package identify its main document? | The package relationships part, _rels/.rels, contains the office document relationship. Resolve its Target to find the main document part. word/document.xml is the usual location, but a reliable parser follows the relationship rather than assuming that path. |
| What does [Content_Types].xml do in DOCX structure? | It maps extensions to default content types and supplies overrides for individual parts. Compare these declarations with the actual entries and relationship types. A missing override or a document variant inconsistent with the extension deserves a recorded structural finding. |
| How do DOCX relationships resolve images? | The main document uses a relationship identifier such as rId7. Its relationship part resolves that identifier to a target such as media/image1.png. The target is relative to the source part, not to the location of the relationships file. |
| What does TargetMode External mean in a DOCX package? | The relationship points outside the package. It can identify a hyperlink, linked image, or attached template. Record the target without retrieving it. A missing external resource is different from a missing internal ZIP entry. |
| Does DOCX ZIP entry order show editing order? | No. Entry sequence reflects package writing and repackaging decisions. It is not a chronological record of paragraph creation. Compare serialization with controlled samples if writer behavior matters, but do not date edits from archive order. |
The rules defining package parts, content types, and relationships for Open XML documents.
The package manifest declaring default and override content types.
The relationships part belonging to the package itself, including its office document entry point.
A relationship attribute value identifying a resource outside the package.
The package address of a part, resolved using package naming rules rather than operating system paths.
The source specific context in which an Id identifies one target and relationship type.
A DOCX is a package, not a single block of text. The ZIP directory identifies entries, while Open Packaging Conventions defines typed parts and their connections. Read [Content_Types].xml and _rels/.rels before interpreting the word folder. The package relationship identifies the office document part. That relationship is the entry point even when a conforming producer uses an unfamiliar physical arrangement.
| Structure | Question answered | Example check |
|---|---|---|
| ZIP directory | Which entries are stored? | Does the declared target actually exist? |
| Content type manifest | What kind of part is each entry? | Is the main part declared as a Word document? |
| Relationships | How are resources connected? | Which image belongs to the header? |
| Source XML | Where is the resource used? | Which drawing references the image relationship? |
These structures should agree. A ZIP entry named image1.png is not necessarily displayed. A relationship to an image does not establish its position on the page. Locate the drawing markup in the source story and resolve its relationship. The XML parts guide explains those source locations.
Record literal entry names before normalizing paths. Duplicate names or conflicting directory records can cause parsers to select different bytes. Do not allow an archive extractor to write outside the examination directory. A safe inventory precedes any automated extraction.
We map declared parts, relationship targets, and archive entries to distinguish a damaged package from an unusual but valid writer workflow.
Request Confidential Consultation Call (833) 292 3733The main document commonly stores its relationships in word/_rels/document.xml.rels. A Target of media/image1.png resolves from the main document's location to word/media/image1.png. It does not resolve from the _rels directory. The relationship Id is unique within that relationships part, not throughout the entire archive.
| Source context | Relationship target | Examination action |
|---|---|---|
| Main document | styles.xml | Resolve to the main document style definitions |
| Header part | media/image2.png | Resolve within the header source context |
| External hyperlink | A web address with TargetMode External | Record without network retrieval |
| Attached template | A local or network path | Document dependency without opening it |
| Embedded object | An embeddings resource | Extract and classify the object independently |
A missing internal target is a concrete package defect. An unreachable external URL is a different condition: the resource was never stored inside the package. Separate both from a detached entry that exists but has no current inbound relationship. Each condition has a different effect on completeness and rendering.
Relationships can appear in supporting stories and resources. A traversal limited to document.xml.rels misses header images and other dependencies. Record the source, Id, Type, Target, and TargetMode for every relationship examined. This list permits another examiner to reproduce the package graph without opening the document in Word.
Desktop Word, online editors, conversion services, and document libraries all create readable DOCX packages. They differ in compression choices, optional parts, namespace declarations, relationship numbering, and entry sequence. Those traits support workflow comparison. They are not unique application fingerprints, and a later save can replace them.
Create controlled samples that reproduce the alleged starting format, template, conversion, and final save. Compare complete package inventories rather than selecting one convenient trait. A file saved directly by a library is not a fair comparison with a library file subsequently opened and saved in Word. The last writer can normalize the earlier package.
Many Word saves use fixed ZIP dates such as 1980 01 01. Other writers use current local times. Neither pattern is a paragraph timeline. ZIP time fields also have limited precision and no inherent timezone. The metadata guide separates these entry values from core properties and external records.
Macro enabled documents and templates use different main part content types from ordinary DOCX. Renaming a DOCM to DOCX does not remove its macro project. Compare declarations, relationships, and actual resources. Strict and Transitional packages also differ in namespace identifiers. Resolve the vocabulary by namespace, not by the spelling of its chosen prefix.
The forgery examination combines these structural observations with content and historical sources. A valid package can contain fabricated wording. An invalid package can result from accidental damage. Structure establishes what the file contains and how it connects, not why someone produced it.
Inventory first, then traverse relationships without retrieving remote resources or letting Word repair the evidence.
We inventory DOCX entries, resolve the complete relationship graph, and identify inconsistent content types, missing resources, detached parts, and external dependencies. Our exhibits connect each structural observation to a named source part and target. The team doing this work is made up of subject matter experts in DOCX file structure who open the ZIP package and read each part directly.

Yes. An embedded object can contain another Office file. Identify its content type and source relationship, preserve its bytes, and examine it as a separate object. Do not assume that the visible preview reproduces every cell or worksheet.
Each source part can have its own relationships. A header image resolves through the header relationships, not necessarily through document.xml.rels. The same Id can legitimately identify different targets in different source contexts.
No. Leftover resources can survive editing or conversion. Establish whether any active relationship or markup references the resource, then describe its stored contents and lack of current display use separately.
The application can remove unreadable markup, rebuild relationships, or discard damaged parts. A repaired file is a derivative. Preserve the original archive and retain the repair message and before and after package inventories.
Yes. Strict and Transitional conformance use different namespace families. Parse namespace identifiers rather than relying on the familiar w prefix. A prefix is merely a local alias chosen by the XML writer.
Name the source part, relationship Id, target, and missing or inconsistent declaration. Explain the observed rendering effect on a controlled copy and distinguish standards compliance from any conclusion about deliberate alteration.
Preserve the unreadable or disputed file as received. A relationship map can explain missing content without changing the original through repair or conversion. Our court qualified experts in DOCX analysis can show the court how the package structure supports or undercuts the claimed origin of a document.
