A PDF digital signature seals a defined range of bytes with a certificate. Forensic verification tests that range, the certificate, the timestamp, and every change made after signing to show whether a signed PDF is still what the signer approved.

Quick Answer. PDF digital signature verification confirms that the bytes covered by a signature have not changed since signing and identifies the signing certificate. Examiners also check the certificate chain and revocation status, any trusted timestamp, the certification permissions, and every incremental update added after signing, because a valid signature does not by itself prove that later appended content is legitimate.
This guide explains how PDF digital signatures work and how examiners verify them. It is part of our PDF Authentication series. Signature verification depends heavily on incremental updates, so read that guide alongside this one.
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| What does a valid PDF signature prove? | That the signed byte range is unchanged since signing and that it was signed with a specific certificate. |
| Is an electronic signature the same as a digital signature? | No. An electronic signature can be a typed name or image. A digital signature is cryptographic. |
| Can a signed PDF be changed? | Yes. Content can be appended after signing. Viewers may or may not warn about it. |
| What is a certification signature? | A signature that sets which changes are allowed afterward, such as none, form filling, or comments. |
| Does the signing time prove when it was signed? | Only if a trusted timestamp is present. Otherwise the time comes from the signer's computer clock. |
| Are signature images verifiable? | A pasted signature image is not cryptographic. It is examined like any other image in the document. |
A cryptographic value created with a private key over a hash of defined content, verifiable with the matching certificate.
The array in a PDF signature that lists the byte ranges covered, normally the whole file except the signature value itself.
The first signature on a document that sets permitted later changes, also called an author signature.
A signature applied to approve a document, such as a signer completing an agreement.
A token from a timestamp authority under RFC 3161 proving the signature existed at a given time.
PDF Advanced Electronic Signatures, the ETSI standard family for long term verifiable PDF signatures.
When a PDF is digitally signed, the software reserves space for the signature, calculates a hash of every other byte in the file as defined by the ByteRange, and signs that hash with the signer's private key. The signature, certificate, and sometimes a timestamp are stored in the reserved space. Any later change to the covered bytes breaks verification.
| Element | What it does | What examiners check |
|---|---|---|
| ByteRange | Defines the covered bytes | That it covers the entire signed revision with no unexplained gaps |
| Signature value | Cryptographic seal over the hash | That it verifies against the covered bytes |
| Certificate chain | Identifies the signer and issuer | Trust anchor, validity period, key usage, and revocation status |
| Timestamp token | Proves when the signature existed | Timestamp authority, token validity, and agreement with other dates |
| Certification permissions | Defines permitted later changes | Whether post signing updates stayed within the permitted level |
We verify the signature cryptographically and examine every byte added after signing. Tell us about the document and we will explain what can be tested.

Academic researchers have published attacks showing that some PDF viewers could be misled into displaying altered content while reporting a valid signature, including incremental saving and shadow attacks. Viewer fixes followed, but these findings show why forensic examination looks at the bytes, not only at a viewer's green checkmark.
| Attribute | Cryptographic digital signature | Simple electronic signature |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Certificate based cryptographic value | Typed name, drawn mark, pasted image, or click |
| Detects later changes | Yes, for the covered bytes | No, not by itself |
| Identifies a key holder | Yes, through the certificate | Relies on platform records |
| Primary evidence | The signature, certificate, and timestamp in the file | The signing platform's audit trail and emails |
| Legal validity in the US | Valid under ESIGN and UETA | Also valid under ESIGN and UETA when intent is shown |
Many signing platforms combine both: a visible electronic signature for each party and a platform digital signature sealing the completed document, plus an audit certificate. Each layer is examined separately.
Verification is performed on a preserved copy with documented software and trust settings.
We verify PDF digital signatures for attorneys, businesses, and individuals. We extract and cryptographically verify every signature, evaluate certificate chains, revocation data, and timestamps, isolate every change made after signing, and correlate the results with signing platform audit trails. Our reports explain in plain language what each signature proves and what it does not, and our examiners testify to those findings. Signature validation is handled by subject matter experts in PDF digital signatures who check certificates, byte ranges, timestamps, and post signing changes together.
Elite Digital Forensics is an independent digital forensics practice serving attorneys, paralegals, in house counsel, insurers, lenders, businesses, and individuals nationwide. Our team includes former law enforcement forensic examiners and court qualified expert witnesses in computer, cell phone, cloud, document, and multimedia forensics. Every engagement begins with a scoped plan, hash verified evidence handling, and a clear explanation of what the examination can answer.
Open the signatures panel in a PDF reader to see the basic status. A forensic verification also checks the byte range coverage, certificate chain and revocation, trusted timestamp, and every change added after signing.
Yes. Changes can be appended as incremental updates after signing. Some changes are permitted, and an examiner determines whether any change altered the signed content or exceeded the permissions.
ByteRange lists the parts of the file covered by the signature, normally everything except the signature value itself. If the range does not cover the full signed revision, the gap is investigated.
It proves the document was signed with a key tied to a certificate. Whether a specific person used that key is a factual question answered with other evidence such as platform records.
A digital signature is a cryptographic seal that detects changes. An electronic signature is any electronic mark showing intent to sign, such as a typed name. Both can be legally valid under ESIGN and UETA.
A timestamp from a trusted timestamp authority under RFC 3161 is strong evidence of when the signature existed. A time without such a token reflects the signer's computer clock.
Send us the details through our secure contact page. We will explain what the signature can prove and how the examination would be scoped. Our court qualified experts in digital signature verification can testify to whether a signature is valid and what was altered after signing.
