Many PDF editors save changes by appending them to the end of the file. The earlier version often survives intact inside the same PDF, allowing examiners to recover what a document said before it was changed.

Quick Answer. A PDF incremental update is a save that appends changed objects, a new cross reference section, and a new trailer to the end of the file instead of rewriting it. The original content remains inside the PDF. By separating each saved section, forensic examiners can render earlier versions, show exactly which objects changed, and often recover the original text or figures.
This guide explains PDF incremental updates and how they reveal edit history. It is part of our PDF Authentication series. Incremental updates are also central to digital signature verification, because changes after signing are usually appended this way.
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| What is an incremental update? | A PDF save that appends changes to the end of the file, leaving earlier content in place. |
| Why do editors save this way? | It is faster, required for preserving signatures, and allowed by the PDF standard. |
| How can you tell a PDF has incremental updates? | Multiple %%EOF markers, several startxref offsets, and trailers with a Prev entry. |
| Can the original version be recovered? | Often. Each earlier section can be isolated and rendered as it looked when saved. |
| Does a full save remove history? | A full rewrite or optimization usually discards earlier sections, though other traces may remain. |
| Are incremental updates always suspicious? | No. Form filling, signing, and annotations create them legitimately. What changed is what matters. |
An appended PDF section containing new or replaced objects, a cross reference section, and a trailer.
The state of a PDF as of one saved section, which can be rendered on its own.
A trailer value giving the byte offset of the previous cross reference section, linking revisions together.
A number attached to each object that can increase when an object number is reused.
A cross reference entry marking an object as deleted, while its old data may remain earlier in the file.
Rewriting the entire PDF, which typically removes earlier revisions from the file.
The PDF standard allows a file to be updated without rewriting it. Each update adds three things to the end of the file: the new or replaced objects, a cross reference section listing them, and a trailer that points back to the previous section. A reader follows the newest trailer and uses the newest version of each object, while the older objects remain in the file.
| Section | Contents | What examiners learn |
|---|---|---|
| Original body | All objects as first created, cross reference, trailer, %%EOF | The document as originally produced |
| First update | Changed page or text objects, new cross reference, trailer with Prev, %%EOF | What was changed in the first edit, and by which software |
| Later updates | Further changes, annotations, form data, or signatures | The sequence and nature of later changes |

A precise list of objects that were added, replaced, or marked free in each update.
The order of changes and, with metadata from each revision, the approximate time and software used.
Whether content was added after a digital signature was applied and whether that change was permitted.
That an update only added a form fill, comment, or signature, which supports authenticity.
The original document a fabricated PDF was built from, when the first revision survives.
| Attribute | Incremental save | Full save or optimization |
|---|---|---|
| How changes are written | Appended to the end | Entire file rewritten |
| Earlier versions in the file | Usually preserved | Usually removed |
| End of file markers | One per save | Typically one |
| Digital signatures | Earlier signatures remain verifiable | Earlier signatures are broken |
| Remaining forensic traces | Full revision history | Document ID change, Producer change, structure differences |
A fabricator who performs a full save removes the earlier revision, but the file then carries a new structure and often a changed document ID and Producer. Those changes are tested in our PDF metadata and PDF structure guides.
Incremental updates are a well known privacy risk. Redactions performed by adding a black box in an update, without removing the underlying text, can leave the original text readable in the earlier revision. Deleted pages, replaced images, and removed comments often survive the same way. In litigation, this can expose information the producing party believed was removed, and it can show precisely how a document evolved.
Examiners handle recovered content carefully. Privileged or protected material found in a revision is reported to retaining counsel so it can be addressed under the applicable rules and any protective order.
Revision recovery works on a preserved copy and leaves the original evidence untouched.
We recover and explain the edit history of PDF documents. We map every saved section, isolate and render each revision, list the objects changed in each update, recover original content, and correlate the history with metadata, signatures, and outside records. Our reports show the history visually and in plain language, suitable for attorney review, negotiation, or court. Our analysts are subject matter experts in PDF revision analysis, so they can extract each saved version of a document and show exactly what changed between them.

It is a way of saving a PDF that appends changed objects, a new cross reference section, and a new trailer to the end of the file, leaving the earlier content in place.
Often, yes. If the PDF was saved incrementally, each earlier version can be isolated and rendered. If it was fully rewritten, earlier versions are usually gone, though other traces of modification remain.
Multiple %%EOF markers, trailers with Prev entries, a changed document ID, and later modification dates all indicate the file was saved again. An examiner can show what changed.
If the redaction only placed a box over the text in an incremental update, the original text often remains in the earlier revision and can be recovered.
No. Incremental updates are how signatures stay valid when later content is added. Whether the added change was permitted is evaluated separately.
Yes. The question is whether the changes are legitimate. Forensic analysis of the revision history helps the court understand exactly what changed.
