Independent forensic analysis of Apple ID and iCloud artifacts — iCloud backups, iCloud Drive, Photos, Messages in iCloud, iCloud Keychain, Family Sharing, trusted-device records — with proper legal-process guidance for server-side content.
Quick Answer. Apple ID and iCloud forensics has two lanes: on-device residue (account plist, trusted-device list, CloudKit sync tokens, Messages-in-iCloud CKMessage records, iCloud Drive brc/brmb metadata) and server-side content (backups, iCloud Drive files, Photos, Notes) which requires either the user’s credentials or a lawful Apple return. On-device analysis proves what account was used, which devices trust each other, and what content has synced.
| Artifact | Path | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| MobileMeAccounts.plist | /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/ | Signed-in Apple ID, DSID, alt-DSID, enabled services |
| com.apple.Preferences.plist | /Library/Preferences/ | iCloud toggles per service |
| Accounts3.sqlite | /private/var/mobile/Library/Accounts/ | All configured accounts (Apple, mail, etc.) |
| Trusted devices | com.apple.private.gmm.plist / IDS logs | Which other Apple devices trust this one |
| Family Sharing | CloudKit records + com.apple.icloud.familycircle.plist | Family members and shared content |
iCloud backup status is recorded in com.apple.mobile.ldbackup and the Unified Log com.apple.MobileBackup subsystem. Every backup start, completion, size, and target is logged, allowing us to prove that a backup happened at a given time even without access to Apple’s servers. Backup exclusions (settings, app-by-app) are recorded and often relevant when a party alleges content should have synced.
Messages in iCloud store CKMessage / CKChat records that survive local deletion; local device-side sync state (chat.db‘s chat_message_join and CloudKit tombstones) reveals what was deleted and when. Photos in iCloud sync via PhotoStreamAgent and photolibraryd with distinctive Unified Log entries. Notes stored in iCloud are in NoteStore.sqlite with CloudKit metadata identifying account and last-sync-server-time.
To obtain iCloud content from Apple directly (backups, Drive, Photos, mail, Find My) attorneys use a subpoena or search warrant per Apple’s Legal Process Guidelines. As independent examiners we do not access accounts without authorization; we guide counsel on scope, formulate requests, and forensically analyze the returned data. Apple’s Advanced Data Protection (opt-in) end-to-end encrypts many services; when enabled, only the user’s trusted devices decrypt.

When retained through counsel, our work product is protected. See the iPhone Forensics hub for the full analytical framework we bring to every matter.
On the device, no. Through Apple with valid legal process (subpoena/warrant), yes — subject to Advanced Data Protection settings.
It blocks Apple-side decryption of most user data. On-device access with the passcode remains fully forensic; without it, ADP is a genuine barrier.
Yes — MobileMeAccounts.plist and Apple’s trusted-device list enumerate every device, its model, and last activity.
Family Sharing records identify each member and shared content. Legal process typically requires per-account authorization; we advise counsel on scope.
