There is no single technique called height analysis. There is a family of photogrammetric methods, and the correct one depends on what still exists: the camera, the scene, the recording, and the metadata. A competent examiner chooses the method the evidence supports rather than forcing the evidence into a preferred workflow.
The original camera view is reproduced at the scene and a calibrated height reference is placed where the subject stood, allowing direct comparison in the same optical geometry. This is the method with the longest history of courtroom acceptance.
Scale is derived from geometry inside the frame, using vanishing points from parallel building lines plus a reference of known height. Useful when scene access is impossible, but sensitive to lens distortion and unknown intrinsics.
The scene is scanned to a dimensionally accurate 3D model, then the original camera position and lens parameters are matched to the model so a virtual reference can be projected at the subject position.
A person of documented height is recorded in the same position with the same camera and settings, giving a direct visual comparison. Simple, transparent, and persuasive when the camera survives.
Multiple overlapping images are used to reconstruct scene geometry and derive measurements. Liscio and colleagues compared this class of software directly against reverse projection in peer reviewed testing.
Published models estimate stature with an associated uncertainty rather than a point value. van den Hout and Alberink set out a hierarchical model of exactly this kind.
Reverse projection has one decisive advantage: it removes most assumptions. Instead of modeling the lens mathematically and hoping the model is right, the examiner uses the same optical path that produced the questioned image. Peer reviewed work has extended it to harder scenarios, including cases where both the camera and the subject were moving, and to computer generated reconstructions built on 3D camera calibration.
Most height analysis requests fail on inputs, not on technique. The following list is the practical intake checklist, and counsel who preserves these items early usually gets a usable opinion.
Examiners rarely measure from an entire video. They measure from selected frames chosen because the subject is upright, both feet are on a visible floor plane, the head top is unobstructed, and the subject is near the position where the reference can be placed. A subject captured mid stride, leaning, crouching, or under a hood produces a wider interval, and it is the examiner obligation to say so plainly rather than to average the problem away.
Scenes get renovated, cameras get replaced, and recorders overwrite. Early scene documentation is often the difference between a usable measurement and no opinion at all.
Height analysis is at its most powerful when it excludes. A well supported interval that does not contain a defendant documented stature is meaningful evidence. The reverse claim, that a matching interval proves identity, is not supportable, because millions of people fall inside any realistic interval.
An examiner who reports a single figure with no interval, no error discussion, and no statement of assumptions has produced an advocacy document, not a measurement. That distinction is usually the most productive line of cross examination in the entire discipline.

No software knows the scale of a scene. Scale comes from a reference of known size in the same optical geometry. Without it, output is a guess with a decimal point.
Height narrows a population. It supports or undercuts an identification, and it can exclude, but standing alone it identifies no one.
Resolution helps landmark location, but lens distortion, camera movement, posture, and footwear remain, and they usually dominate the interval.
A different sensor or focal length reproduces a different geometry. Matching the original optics, or fully characterizing them, is a requirement rather than a preference.

Accuracy depends on the footage and the method. Under favorable conditions, with the original camera, an unaltered scene, and the subject standing upright near the calibration position, the reported interval can be tight. With a wide angle lens, an oblique viewing angle, low resolution, or a subject in motion, the interval widens considerably. Any examiner who reports a single number with no interval has skipped the most important part of the analysis.
No. Height is a class characteristic, not an individualizing one. A large share of the adult population falls within any realistic interval. Height analysis is most probative when it excludes a candidate, and it is used alongside other evidence when it is consistent with one.
It must. Footwear adds measurable height that the camera records as part of the person. If the footwear is known or recovered, its contribution can be measured and subtracted. If it is unknown, the report should state that as an unresolved variable and widen the interval accordingly.
Reverse projection becomes unavailable in its strongest form. The examiner may still work from a 3D scan of the scene with solved camera parameters, or from single view metrology using geometry inside the frame, but the uncertainty grows and the report must say so.
Photogrammetric measurement is offered under Federal Rule of Evidence 702 and evaluated for reliability under Daubert and Kumho Tire. Methods grounded in published, testable geometry, applied with documented calibration and stated error, are the ones that survive that review.
Scene work is often a single day. Analysis and reporting typically follow within one to two weeks, depending on how many frames and subjects are at issue and whether a 3D scan is required.
